Marvelous Mama: Morning Sickness
February 17th, 2009Dealing with Morning Sickness
Well, it seems to be that time of year where everyone is pregnant. I have been hearing about morning sickness every time I call friends and sisters, so I thought it would be a good time to let you know your options.
When I was pregnant with my son, I was throwing up 7-9 times a days – throughout my whole pregnancy, it never stopped. This is not normal for most women, as they usually have morning sickness for one trimester, if they get it at all. When we do, it is no fun… especially with all there is to do to prepare for the new arrival, and taking care of your other children you may already have.
Here are a few ways to deal with the nausea and get back to your daily routine:
1) Sip a glass of ginger ale (or sprite, or 7-up) when you feel the nausea coming on.
2) Another idea is Preggy Pops which you can buy online or from your local maternity store.
3) Drinking decaffeinated peppermint tea or sucking on a peppermint candy if you are on the go helps settle your stomach as well. Keep some in your purse.
4) If the nausea hits you as soon you wake up in the morning, keep a bag of soda crackers at your bedside and have a couple even before you get out of bed in the morning.
5) If it comes to a point where you are throwing up multiple times a days, losing weight, or not being able to function on a day to day basis, you should consult with your doctor about a prescription called Diclectin. It is an anti-nausea pill that is safer than most other products out there during pregnancy. You may see it among your friends…they are usually white tablets with an outline of a pregnant woman on them in pink, although not always. It is currently available in Canada. An alternative may be available in the USA.
If you find you get nauseous after taking your prenatal vitamin in the morning, try taking an AM/PM type pill…. These are usually more gentle on the stomach as they are split into 2 pills instead of one but they do require prescription. There is one out there (pictured below) which I know is available in Canada, and should be in the United States as well… it is called PregVit Folic5. It has 5mg of folic acid which is wonderful for your unborn baby’s development. It is also HALAL certified by ISNA Canada and labeled Kosher. You can find their website at http://www.pregvitfolic5.com.
