Pop Culture Hijabi: Stocking up on Scarves
June 13th, 2009A few months ago, one of my non-Muslims friends was planning a trip to Egypt. In the days before she left, I received the funniest phone call. She was out shopping for the vacation, preparing for some visits to mosques, and she called me excitedly from H&M. “Did you know that they sell scarves here?”
I think Muslim girls are well aware that major retailers are selling scarves that can easily function as hijabs. It’s become quite convenient.
I remember back when I started wearing hijab, which wasn’t even all that long ago. I had to wait until ISNA every year to stock up on good scarves.
Every year, I’d tell myself to make a list of the colors I’d need to search for, but, of course, that would never happen.
Now, more colors than ever are available out there.
Even my older relatives have started to notice that my hijab line has grown. One of my aunts always asks where I got my scarf from, and she’s always shocked when I tell her Old Navy or H&M.
Here are some favorite scarves from the mall starting with New York & Company (these are all on sale for $9.95)

City Style Global Chic Purple Scarf

City Style Metallic Summer Scarf

City Style Neutral Strip Scarf
In fact, now that I’ve browsed the whole collection, I pretty much want all these colors.
And here’s a cute scarf from Old Navy, which is apparently all about the black and white right now (it’s only $5.00):

Black and White Scarf
One final one from H&M. I apologize for the low-res picture. H&M really needs to have a Web site so I don’t have to resort to taking my own pictures:

H&M Metallic Scarf
Great, now after all that Internet browsing, I’m going to have to go shopping.

These scarves are beautiful. Looks like we have the same taste in colors and design!
I was wondering what kind of scarves do you favor? What wears well and washes well or do you mostly dry clean? 100% Silk, 50/50% (Silk and Pashmina), 100% Pashmina, 100% Viscose or just cotton? How do you choose? Also what do you have more of….prints or solids? I have experienced cheap silk that has been ruined by pins. I look for better quality scarves now. Lesson learned. If you want to buy a gift for a Hijabi woman what would be the best or safest one to buy? Also, what would be the most you’ve ever splurged on a wonderful scarf that you felt you just could not live without!??? Just curious. Thanks for teaching us how to store them and keep them fresh smelling.
I didn’t see this comment until just now!
Well, I actually prefer square, polyester scarves for work. I think they look the best on me, and I feel more secure in them because they don’t move around as much. But, in the summer, I definitely wear the scarves I posted on the weekends. Plus, I think they’re a lot lighter in the hot weather, and you don’t necessarily have to pin them to keep them on.
But I feel like polyester is the easiest to keep clean. I never dry my scarves; I always hang-dry them. And they dry in 10 minutes! Plus, I think mostly everything washes out of polyester.
Silk scarves look the best, but I keep those for my fancy outfits. I’m always scared to wash those, too. I don’t think I’ve had to wash any so far, but I would probably opt to get them dry-cleaned. Pashmina scarves are usually really pretty, but unless it’s winter-time, those are pretty heavy to wear.
I tend to buy mostly solid scarves, but I feel like I should look for more prints. Especially since I tend to buy solid clothes, too. Printed hijabs are a gamble, because you often can’t wear them with more than one or two outfits. But they definitely add to an outfit that might otherwise be boring!
I think, gift-wise, pashminas are the best because they just look nicer. And, if someone doesn’t want to wear it on their head, they can just use it as a wrap.
I don’t know if I’ve ever bought a scarf that I just couldn’t live without! I mostly save that for shoes.
