Pop Culture Hijabi: Following the trends
August 8th, 2009There are a lot of fashion trends out there that take a while to grow on me. Skinny jeans, for example. I don’t love all of them, but I don’t hate them anymore either. They work on certain outfits and on certain people.
I also instantly hated leggings. I still don’t like them most of the time, but once you see them enough, they seem more normal.
One trend I can’t see ever liking is harem pants. It seems like they would be perfect for Muslim women, since they’re inspired by Eastern trends and are loose around the hips. But there is no way I can see them somewhere and think, “Those look really cute.”
I think it goes back to being Pakistani. We wear similar pants with our shalwar kameez, and I’ve never really liked them. The small ankle openings really bother me. I think they look fine when worn with shalwar kameez, but I would prefer not to have to wear them.
So are there any trends out there that you all love? Or are there items that have become popular and you just can’t understand why?

I can’t stand the trend of all those bright colors ala Kanye West or whoever started it. It is sooo annoying. And I agree about the skinny pants, I guess if you wear a nice long tunic they can look ok. But if you have any meat on your bones whatsoever you look like a barrel with peg legs lol.
I totally agree with you regarding the skinny jeans. I don’t think it’s flattering, especially if you are overweight. It doesn’t look good on guys either. However, I got used to them now. Still don’t think guys should wear them, lol.
The harem pants are ok, but it depends on the style. I really dont get the MC hammer ones with the crotch hanging down! That is just weird!
Harem pants – yeah, the ones with the super low crotch – are actually fashionable here in my adopted 95% Catholic country! I just bought myself a number of patterns with a harem pants or harem skirt (like harem pants, only without actual legs) element, actually.
The funny thing is the MC hammer pants are very similar to the traditional pants worn by the Druz of Lebanon.
I think the bright colors are a throwback to the 80s. But I hated 80s fashion, and I agree, I can’t get behind it.
Regarding the skinny jeans and guys: I was just saying to someone that I can’t wait until guys no longer wear them. They’re just TOO tight.
