Burqini swim story update
August 16th, 2009A few days ago we posted this article about a woman kicked out of a swimming pool in France for wearing an Islamic swimsuit and many of you shared your thoughts.
It’s now coming out that she wasn’t wearing some homemade suit, but an actual hijabi swimsuit from Dubai by the company MyCozzie.

Here is a picture of a suit made by my MyCozzie:

Apparently the woman was kicked out because the suit was deemed “unhygienic” on her third visit to the pool!

I’m glad that it’s becoming clear what exactly she was wearing. This changes my opinion, now. There’s really no excuse for kicking her out if it was an actual swimsuit.
Men wearing loose surfer-style shorts are refused entry too. Many people have experience of being refused entry to French public swimming pools because their attire was not in line with the regulations. It is nothing to do with it being a hijab friendly suit per se. The rules are the same for everybody, Muslim or not. Long, loose clothing is considered unhygienic, and everyone in France knows this. The person cannot shower properly before entering the pool when their body is covered like this. It is also more difficult to rescue a person wearing long clothes and it is more likely that such clothes will catch in drains or filters, endangering the swimmer. The woman in question is French and knows the rules. She did this to make a political point. There is no need to take offence where none is intended.
