Hijabtrendz Q&A: Natural looking lips
September 2nd, 2009Can you please help me find a good lip products preferably lip gloss and lip balms/lip butters? Sometimes i find lip butters and lip sticks/gloss drying and it chaps my lips and I find my lip darkening.
Dear Reader,
What we’ve found has taken us years to get right and as a matter of fact it just hit us a few days ago. How do people seem to have perfect glossy looking lips? Whenever we’ve applied lipstick our lips dry out and we feel like we’re biting them the rest of the day and they gets all nasty and start to peel.
Sorry for the graphic description.
But after some trial and error here is what we’ve discovered.
Lip gloss that comes in those long tubes or with the stick applicator will always dry your lips. There is something sticky about it and even if it’s not that sticky it just has a drying effect.
The best thing is to apply a lip balm before the gloss, or even a moisturizing lipstick that is a nice light color. This helps seal in the moisture and create a protective coating between your lips and the gloss.
Then you can layer the gloss on top and you should be well on your way.
As far as products we recommend, we’re a little biased. We absolutely love Korres because we know it works and their products do not contain any chemicals that could potentially have the drying effect you mentioned above.
This is our exact routine:
1. Apply Korres lip balm in mango or Korres lipstick in natural pink.
2. Then apply Korres lip gloss in natural purple.
Play around with colors until you get something you like.
Tip: The best part about Korres is that the colors are light and don’t look fake so you can easily achieve a “natural” look to your lips without looking like you piled on the makeup.
Bonus Tip: If you think Korres is pricey you can usually find deals at Sephora for combination sets where you can get 3 glosses for the price of 1 and other such deals.
If any of you have tips or other product suggestions please chip in!

Can you please help me to find a product for darkening lips (due to lipstick)
Thanks
Saleema.. can you clarify what you mean? Do you want to darken your lips with color or are you looking for a makeup remover?
Yes,even i have tht problem..i find my lips bit darkened when i use lipsticks regularly…feels like its pigmented. To cover that,i have to use tinted lipglosses..but those chap my lips so bad.Totally helpless sometimes
I think Korres products are wonderful. For myself, I find that exfoliating (The Body Shop Lip Scruff is wonderful – but hard to find!!) and then using an overnight lip treatment (Neutrogena Overnight Lip Treatment) does wonders for keeping my lips moist and renewed. You can even make your own scruff (use an old toothbrush and a bit of your face mask) or super moisturizer (perhaps vaseline mixed with a bit of olive oil). I know a lot of women who like Carmex lip ointment and I must admit it’s wonderful for cold sores/fever blisters but it has a drying agent in it, Salicylic acid. You have to keep your lips moisturized and especially now since autumn and the winter are approaching. Don’t forget sunscreen on your lips or a lip balm that includes sunscreen during the day. Switching to one w/o sunscreen at night would be a better choice. I was always taught not to sleep in a sunscreen face or lip moisturizer (only for the daytime). This is a bit pricey but well worth it…Janet Sartin makes a product called, “Lip Sartinizer”. It sells for $25 in a tube or a glass jar. I’ve had the glass jar for over a year now and it’s amazing. Nothing else would help my lips heal from dryness, peeling, dull looking until I started using this. I recommended it to a friend and now she swears by it (not literally of course!).
I was told that Janet developed this for her son who had problems with his lips and nothing would help him. I don’t know what’s in it, but it’s amazing and you only need a little. Well worth the price. For dark lips that can be due to your lip products but also can be due to an unhealthy diet or too much caffeine. More fruits and especially red dates (red date water) help! Also, try putting regular paste toothpaste on your lips before going to bed and leaving overnight. It should help your lips look fresher and more red looking in the morning. These are old tricks handed down and have worked for me but everyone is different so they may not work for you but it’s always worth a try with harmless ingredients.
Jodi thanks so much for your input, you’re awesome!
I’ll try to see if I can find out more about this lip darkening thing, it’s really caught my interest. I wonder if there are any other reasons for it? Could it be hereditary?
In my homeplace, women use butter or cream(simple kitchen stuff):) to soothe dry and chapped lips. This is for lips that have the cracked look and that which sometimes bleed. For me,wearing sunscreen for my face and using lip products containing sunscreen make my face break out and the latter makes my lips dry and more chapped. So i steer away from sunscreens.
I purchased few tins for myself last winter when i was visiting Europe. They are so cheap and treated my chapped lips quickly during those harsh winters. They have a rose oil vaseline in a cute little pink tin. This gives a pink tint to the lips.Very natural looking too.
The Nivea chapsticks are really cool.So buttery and feminine and mild.It gives slight shine. Its great thruout the year
My favourite actually is Vaseline lip therapy that comes in various varieties in cute little tins.If you are able to find these in the US,it would be awesome. And please let me know
The vaseline lip therapy has very few ingredients.I find that safe even to use for my kids.Im more towards natural/and/or few ingredients.
If sunscreen bothers you, try looking for organic products. My daughter had such sensitivity to sunscreen so I ended up using California baby

It’s too expensive but I had to use it as nothing else worked.
But if it’s because those lotions are too greasy, then yeah it’s hard to find stuff that doesn’t clog up the skin.
Regarding the Nivea stuff we did a post last year about it:

Most Walgreens now carry a lot of their products.
