5 cheap ways to cure dry hair
December 21st, 2009Dealing with a dry scalp and dry hair is one of those miserable things that you have to do trial and error with until you figure out what works for you.
There are so many items on the market claiming to “get rid of dandruff” or “bring moisture back to your locks” and we’ve compiled a list of some inexpensive ways to cure dryness.
1. Limit your hot showers. Steam and hot water seem like a logical solution right? After all it is a type of moisture. But the downside is that it literally pulls moisture away from your body and you get an even dryer scalp!
2. Rinse your hair with lukewarm or cold water after you are done shampooing/conditioning. The cold water seals the hair and keeps the moisture in.
3. Try not to wash your hair every single day. If you can wait a day or two between shampooing you’ll do wonders for your scalp.
4. Invest in a quality product that you can leave in your hair for a few days that smells good and keeps your strands healthy.
5. Use natural olive oil as a leave-in conditioner overnight or for a few hours. For best results wrap your head with a warm towel to help the olive oil settle into your scalp and hair.
We’d like to hear from you too! Let us know how you deal with these issues. Is there some special routine you go through?

Salaam!
The dry winter months are hard on my skin, but I have finally found the answer.
Coconut oil! Actually, I knew it was the answer ages ago…should’ve listened to my mother. But yeah – I rub it into my skin right after a shower which keeps it super soft and not at all oily or greasy. As for my hair, I’ll massage it into my scalp and leave it in for a day or two. Once it’s time to wash it out, my hair is super soft.
These are great tips, I was just telling my bff that I am so frustrated with my dry hair! COOL
I love the idea about coconut oil I’m guessing it smells better than olive oil loool.
hey Mariam these are all great tips I’ll have to try your cold water tip because I always talk very hot showers and maybe that’s why I don’t like how my hair is always dry. I was wondering if you can make a piece about best gadgets for new moms and must haves?
Anonymous.. love the idea of coconut oil. Where do you usually get it? The only places I’ve seen it specifically for hair/skin is at ethnic grocery stores.
Zeena you’re funny.. olive oil does smell..but it’s not THAT bad
Seleena.. I’ll def. do a post on that, do share if you have any gadgets you like too!
Oh…I had no idea there’s a special kind formulated for hair/skin. I’ve been using the stuff I find in Indian grocery stores (usually the Parachute brand) and even super markets ever since I was a kid. So long as the label on the container says “pure coconut oil,” you can pretty much use it for whatever you want whether it’s for cooking or for hair and skin.
Anonymous.. hmm I’ll have to try that out.
I’m sure it’s really affordable too. It’s funny how all the things out on the market claim to be the real deal but they have so many other ingredients in them. I’m going to give it a try. Hopefully I won’t make people hungry around me by smelling like a coconut lol.
I agree with the coconut oil idea. Just go for virgin or extra virgin coconut oil and you’ll be on your way to a tropical princess!! you’ll be hooked for life!
caution though, it can easily get hard if the weather is cold or if it is stored in air conditioned room.
