A woman stops wearing leggings in public because of modesty

Mariam Sobh Hijab Fashion and Hijab Style Blog

This post has made it around the internet lately, and in case you haven’t read it, or don’t have the time… basically she says she’s not going to wear leggings/yoga pants that are tight and form fitting unless she has a long top on. She says she felt that she didn’t want to entice men, and she also wanted to respect her husband.

Apparently she asked men, including her husband, about whether they felt it was attractive and her husband says he has to look away, because it’s hard when women are walking around showing off their bodies in form fitting outfits.

Now, I’m not going to get into an argument about whether men should be able to “control” themselves, or how women should be able to wear whatever they want. I just think it was brave of her to voice her thoughts on an issue that will rile people up.

I respect her for saying she wants to dress more modestly and that she doesn’tĀ feel the need to show it all off.

That’s not a popular opinion to have. Many people will ridicule you and say you’re a prude if you want to keep some things hidden and mysterious.

I personally don’t cover up because I’m worried about turning men on. Because, well everyone has their own fantasies, and maybe some men like to see a woman covered from head to toe lol.

For me, it’s more about feeling comfortable going out. When I wear things that are little looser and less form fitting, I’m not as preoccupied with my body. That’s just me. If I want to wear something that’s a little more form fitting, I start to stress about whether I need to lose more weight etc.

I have noticed personally, that I feel more confident when I wear long tops that cover up my behind. And then there are days that I feel in really good shape and I don’t mind tucking my shirt in when I’m wearing a work outfit of dress pants and a blazer.

But the real thing I wanted to mention, is just that the trend of the leggings and yoga pants etc. has gotten to a point that it’s a little bit much.

leggings are not meant to be pants

Some women don’t seem to pay attention to the fact that sometimes these pants are see-through when they’re stretched too far, and other women try to force themselves in pants that are obviously 2 sizes to small. I think we need to re evaluate it as a fashion trend.

If you’re working out, ok that’s understandable, people want to feel like they’re holding in the jiggle (believe me I feel better wearing workout tights). But.. at the same time, it’s not a fashion. Walking around like that can be awkward. Sometimes I want to tell people “did you forget your dress or skirt?” Because they literally look like they are walking around in pantyhose.

I know I sound like I’m judging, but I just thought I’d throw in some of my musings.

I know people should wear whatever they want, and perhaps if we have friends we care about, we should let them know just so they don’t look back later and say “Why didn’t you tell me my pants were see-through!” or “OMG I can’t believe you let me walk around looking like a stuffed sausage!”

Now, don’t get riled up, I’m saying this all in good fun. Who knows maybe I’ll walk around one day in leggings and a crop top. LOL.

What are your thoughts? Should leggings be used as pants or more of a layering piece with tunics and dresses etc?

Zeynub, thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts. That’s so true that it’s not one gender that’s getting to into this look. I was pleasantly surprised to see a new trend for men that is sweatpants but their really baggy almost like hammer pants from back in the day. Everyone looks better when they leave a little mystery hehe.

I read the article, and absolutely agree that this whole leggings/tights as pants trend is unsettling. Regardless of gender, a person’s body is one that Allah gave them – to care for, to cover, and to respect. I’ve noticed a lot of men wearing their pants this way too, so I’m not just pointing out women here.
Modesty is innate, which is probably why we feel more comfortable wearing modest clothes.
    And Allah Knows Best.
    Great read Mariam!
