10 Healthy snacks to keep you going

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Everyone has moments of crash and burn when the only thing that keeps them going is chocolate or some other tasty sweet.

Lately we’ve been trying to do our best and bust out the healthy stuff. What’s amazing is how much better we feel once we’ve eaten something substantial.

It’s not rocket science, we know, but it’s great to remind ourselves every now and then.

Here are some of the things we try to munch on when the Gremlin inside is trying to get us to “eat that Kit Kat, it’s OK you’ll workout later”:

  1. Handful of almonds and Craisins.
  2. A bowl of mixed greens with mandarin orange pieces, balsamic vinaigrette.
  3. A small 6 oz yogurt (we avoid fat free because of the fake sweetener, but you can find 99% fat free).
  4. Handful of baby carrots.
  5. Water or seltzer water with frozen fruit instead of ice.
  6. A bowl of Arugula with beets, avocado, and balsamic vinaigrette.
  7. Fresh piece of fruit that’s in season.
  8. Green pepper sliced in strips with a tiny dash of lemon and salt.
  9. Pretzels
  10. Pudding mixed with some whipped topping and fresh fruit chunks.

**Make sure you always eat a decent breakfast, lunch, and dinner then you won’t be snacking all the time on an empty stomach.**

What are your tips for beating the snacking habit with something healthy?

Behind the Screen: Rubber legs

Behind the Screen

I keep talking about how I want to get back in shape and sadly I haven’t had the time to pursue my workout goals as much as I’d like. Every time I plan to blog about it, I realize, oops I haven’t done more than run 15 minutes on the treadmill twice a week.

Last night I had a work meeting and jumped on the bus hoping I’d get there at least 5 minutes early. Turns out I was on an express bus that was making no stops until it got to the train station, which is about 5 or 6 blocks away from my work.

As soon as we reached the train station I had about 3 minutes to make the meeting, so I ran like I’ve never run before. All of a sudden my legs felt like rubber. And I fell *splat* my face just barely hitting the pavement. I was thankful that my pants didn’t tear but they got a little scuffed on the knees. And that’s when it hit me. Boy am I out of shape! My lungs were burning from the cold air, and when I did get to the meeting (2 minutes late) I was trying to hide my huffing and puffing. It seemed like forever before my breathing became normal.

Like it or Leave it: Veilkini-another modest swimsuit

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

Most of you have probably seen all sorts of Islamic swimsuits out on the market and although they may look pretty similar, it all comes down to the name it seems.
Check out the “Veilkini Swimsuit” that Bahiya Collections is selling.

One of the unique features for this suit is the fact that you can attach the shirt from inside so that it hooks to the pants which means you don’t have to worry about your shirt floating up when you hit the water.

How to find an Islamic swimsuit

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

We recently received this question from a concerned husband of a hijabi. We thought we’d share it with you and our answer as well. If any of you have suggestions for him please feel free to add your comments!

Question:

Living in Southern California, we have tons of fun places here that involve getting wet. I would love to take my wife to these places, but it becomes a problem because she wears the hijab. She never wants to go to the beach because she can’t go in the water and she either ends up sitting by herself or not coming. There are lots of water parks that she can’t go to. Even the swimming pool in out apartment building is “off limits” to her because of the hijab issue.

I suggested to her that she try one of those Islamic swim outfits that have been labeled “burqinis”. But she says that they are VERY ugly would not be caught dead wearing them.
