10 Healthy snacks to keep you going

Everyone has moments of crash and burn when the only thing that keeps them going is chocolate or some other tasty sweet.

Lately we’ve been trying to do our best and bust out the healthy stuff. What’s amazing is how much better we feel once we’ve eaten something substantial.

It’s not rocket science, we know, but it’s great to remind ourselves every now and then.

Here are some of the things we try to munch on when the Gremlin inside is trying to get us to “eat that Kit Kat, it’s OK you’ll workout later”:

Handful of almonds and Craisins.
A bowl of mixed greens with mandarin orange pieces, balsamic vinaigrette.
A small 6 oz yogurt (we avoid fat free because of the fake sweetener, but you can find 99% fat free).
Handful of baby carrots.
Water or seltzer water with frozen fruit instead of ice.
A bowl of Arugula with beets, avocado, and balsamic vinaigrette.
Fresh piece of fruit that’s in season.
Green pepper sliced in strips with a tiny dash of lemon and salt.
Pretzels
Pudding mixed with some whipped topping and fresh fruit chunks.

**Make sure you always eat a decent breakfast, lunch, and dinner then you won’t be snacking all the time on an empty stomach.**

Behind the Screen: Rubber legs

I keep talking about how I want to get back in shape and sadly I haven’t had the time to pursue my workout goals as much as I’d like. Every time I plan to blog about it, I realize, oops I haven’t done more than run 15 minutes on the treadmill twice a week.

Last night I had a work meeting and jumped on the bus hoping I’d get there at least 5 minutes early. Turns out I was on an express bus that was making no stops until it got to the train station, which is about 5 or 6 blocks away from my work.

As soon as we reached the train station I had about 3 minutes to make the meeting, so I ran like I’ve never run before. All of a sudden my legs felt like rubber. And I fell *splat* my face just barely hitting the pavement. I was thankful that my pants didn’t tear but they got a little scuffed on the knees. And that’s when it hit me. Boy am I out of shape! My lungs were burning from the cold air, and when I did get to the meeting (2 minutes late) I was trying to hide my huffing and puffing. It seemed like forever before my breathing became normal.

Although I’m out of shape, I did notice how good it felt to have all that adrenaline. I miss that. Whenever I start working out I feel like it’s dragging, but there is this point that you hit where you just feel amazing and like you can keep going. It’s just hard honestly to keep a routine when everything else in my life is chaos.

My work schedule is all over the place, my husband commutes an hour to and from work so he’s exhausted by the time he gets home, and in the end the easiest thing to do with two kids is wait until they go to sleep for the night and relax in front of the television.

But I have to say I’m sick of watching The Biggest Loser and knowing that I’m totally doing everything they say not to. I binge on junk food to keep my energy level up, I don’t get enough sleep, and I spread myself too thin.

I think I actually gained 5 pounds in the last week, which is making me even more frustrated. Not to mention the fact that I can’t quite squeeze into all my pre-pregnancy clothes.

So what am I to do?

I have to walk the walk. It’s time to stop making excuses and make myself a priority. I’m going to hit the gym tonight, and I’m going to get rid of my candy stash.

I’m counting on you guys to hold me to it. Remind me to check in with you every Tuesday on my progress.
