Marvelous Mama: Recalls

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

If you’re planning to buy a crib or have an old one that you’re planning to reuse, make sure to take note of this recent article from CBC News.

Vancouver-based manufacturer Stork Craft is voluntarily recalling more than a million baby cribs in Canada and the United States over a potential suffocation hazard.

The cribs were manufactured in Canada, China and Indonesia between May 2000 and November 2008, the company said in a release.

About 494,000 of the cribs were sold in Canada and 535,000 in the U.S. in several retailers such as Wal-Mart, Kmart and J.C. Penny, as well as on several websites, including Amazon.com, Babiesrus.com, Costco.com and Walmart.com, the U.S.Consumer Product Safety Commission said in an advisory Tuesday.

Marvelous Mama: The Layette

Whether you are a first time mother, or fifth time mother; in your first trimester or last, you know that you want to be prepared to bring baby home and have the necessities on hand.

Whether or not you know the baby’s sex, you can still make a list or start shopping – if you do not know the sex, just keep the colors neutral (i.e white, beige, etc).

What you may want to do is start a baby registry at Wal-Mart and diaper-eez or any other store you prefer. (I don’t work for them I just love their prices lol). This way family and friends can go online or go to the store, put your name into the registry computer, and they will see what you still need for baby. It is pure convenience. I myself do my shopping in my last trimester… things I look for are:

Marvelous Mama: Quick Tips

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Yes, you are carrying your child but what are some other ways to get yourself and your husband/children involved in the pregnancy too?

There is a website called Lilypie which is where you can make a pregnancy counter for how many days you have left until you give birth. You can add it to your email or website for all to see.

There is also Babycenter where you can sign up and they have weekly emails that they will send you throughout your pregnancy about your unborn child.

Last but not least, we all know that when we have a new addition arriving, the older siblings may start feeling left out, as all the attention is on the soon to be new baby brother or sister. Let them help you choose items for the nursery or fold up baby clothes, pick out the first outfit the new baby will wear coming home from the hospital, and yes, even buy them a few gifts to open the day of the baby shower/aqeeqah so they do not feel left out.

Also, please make sure to tell friends and family to greet the older children when they come in the house first, before moving on to the new baby. This will help ease the child’s fear that they are being put second, or forgotten.

Marvelous Mama: Morning Sickness

Dealing with Morning Sickness

Well, it seems to be that time of year where everyone is pregnant. I have been hearing about morning sickness every time I call friends and sisters, so I thought it would be a good time to let you know your options.

When I was pregnant with my son, I was throwing up 7-9 times a days – throughout my whole pregnancy, it never stopped. This is not normal for most women, as they usually have morning sickness for one trimester, if they get it at all. When we do, it is no fun… especially with all there is to do to prepare for the new arrival, and taking care of your other children you may already have.

Here are a few ways to deal with the nausea and get back to your daily routine:

Marvelous Mama: Keeping Safe During Pregnancy

Today’s post is brought to you by
Splashgear now go get wet!®

Aside from the obvious things we know not to do during our ante-natal months (drink, smoke, cliff dive, etc) what are some others you are on the middle line about?

Here are some most common questions, answered.

Things you must not do:

You should not take prescription drugs or OTC (over the counter) medications including aspirin unless instructed to do so by your doctor.

You should not drink too much caffeine – it is thought to increase the risk of your child contracting diabetes.

Are you a mother already?

Lifting your son/daughter if over 20lbs is not always a good idea, although sometimes it is inevitable as we all know. Try sitting down and lifting them on your lap, in lieu of carrying them.
