Share your experiences with hijab

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Want to share your thoughts/experiences on being a Muslim women or wearing hijab? Then feel free to take advantage of these two opportunities:

  • Women’s Voices Now (WVN), a new not-for-profit social enterprise based in New York City is having it’s first short-film festival. The festival is open to all filmmakers regardless of gender or background, but the subject matter is specific to women OF ALL FAITHS living in the Muslim world, or Muslim women living as minorities around the globe. For further details about WVN or to submit a film, please visit WomensVoicesNow.org.
  • Radio Free Europe and our local reporters have gone out on the street in various countries and ask women why they do (or don’t) wear the hijab. The videos are short, around 5 minutes each, but they give a local perspective into an issue that has become an international debate. Our hope is that more Muslim women will join the debate and upload videos of themselves explaining why they do or do not wear the hijab. You can watch the videos here: http://www.rferl.org/archive/Project_Hijab/latest/3248/3248.html And, if you like, you can send us a video here: webteam@rferl.org

    Would you buy halal lipstick?

    Friday, July 23rd, 2010

The BBC just published an article (you can watch the video below) about a new halal makeup line called Samina Pure.

The makeup line is based in the UK (but shipped in from Australia) and we are excited to see that it is cruelty free and founded by a Muslim woman who wanted to find a better alternative to makeup currently on the market.

Have any of you tried or heard of this brand before? Would you buy makeup if it said it was halal certified or do you already have a favorite brand?

    Harrod’s offers abayas for sale

    Friday, July 16th, 2010

It’s not surprising, but once again in the news we have an issue of Muslim women’s hijab fashion.

Dozens of news agencies have picked up the piece on Harrods and there people for and against the latest move to sell abayas in the mainstream department store.

You can read the article from The Boston Globe here.

The abayas for sale are designed by the Beljafla sisters whom we interviewed exactly a year ago about their couture abayas.
