Behind the screen: Getting settled

Behind the Screen

I know that I promised to have a new hijabtrendz television episode on the first of each month, and if any of you noticed, we didn’t have one on November 1st.

That’s because I ended up having my baby that day.

I was a little relieved that Layla wasn’t born on Halloween because everyone was on my case at work about how my daughter would never enjoy her birthday because everyone would be out trick or treating. I know that sounds silly, but it was great to have a day all to herself. I’m guessing when she gets older she’ll like the idea.

It’s not like you can actually plan when your baby is born unless you have a c-section or are induced, then you can get closer to your preferred date. I remember my doc asking me (I was overdue) if there was a specific date I’d like to be induced? Thankfully no induction was necessary.

Around 2am on November 1st (right at the time change) I woke up not knowing why. Then I felt my water break. With my first daughter my water broke in a huge gush, but this was a little more subtle. Yet, I knew it was time to head to the hospital soon even though there were no contractions. I woke up my husband, “My water just broke, I’m going to go call the doctor.”

Good deals on baby-mama products

the Savvy Hijabi

Ladies whether you have kids or not you can definitely keep up to date on great deals for those baby-mamas out there.

Tell your friends, co-workers, heck.. just keep an eye on these yourself because you may be a baby-mama some day :) .

I like to call these products baby-mama because they’re for the baby technically, but if they’re chic enough the mama can definitely do some major paparazzi posing with them.

First I have to tell you about a great stroller giveaway that’s happening… if you’re a mom to be you know that you have to have the top of the line stuff. Check out Trends For Kids. They’re really cool. And right now on Facebook if you become a fan and are the 600th person to join you get a free stroller. Talk about hot!

Next I have to tell you about Billion Dollar Babes… the sample site is having a sale on Mutsy another stroller brand, I’m not sure if it’s just accessories or the actual stroller. However, it doesn’t hurt to check it out.

So these are two great things you can save some $$$ on right now.

I’ll keep you posted on anything else I happen to come across. If you have tips do send them my way!

Broken computer, NYC Fashion Week, and maternity fashion flaws

Behind the Screen

I used to hate Mac computers. I only used a PC and that was it. I had no desire to ever do anything differently. However, we ended up getting a Mac and now I’m stuck on it.

I never knew how dependent I’d become upon that laptop until it decided to die. Now I’m using my husband’s PC laptop from work and it’s just not the same. I really hope the Mac can be fixed, we’ll just have to wait and see.

It’s kind of sad how reliant I am on that piece of hardware, I should definitely take a break from all kinds of electronics and get back to nature.

I was hoping to attend New York Fashion Week (it starts the 10th), but I’m not really supposed to be traveling long distances as it’s getting closer to my due date. Having to reject the invitation was the hardest thing to do, but I did learn about how the system works so that I’ll be better prepared the next time I apply to attend the event. Anyone want to go with me next year? :)

Lately, I’ve become really interested in relaxation techniques and the types of music that just help you feel at ease. If you’re interested in some good picks then follow me on twitter and we can share in the conversation.

KaramelSutra

My other new obsession thanks to a friend who came over for iftar the other night, is Ben and Jerry’s “Karamel Sutra” flavored ice cream. It’s not a good obsession because I want to go out right now and buy another container just for myself. I only have a small amount of time before the baby is due and I’ve really got to keep from piling on the pounds.

Speaking of baby stuff, some of you have written asking me to do some more posts on maternity fashion. I used to write them more often, but lately I’ve been feeling really annoyed with it. I actually realized that I despise maternity clothes. Occasionally you can find nice things, and if you’re working you really want to find decent outfits, but in general they do not fit the way you want.

I can’t tell you how sick and tired I am of hiking my pants up and they keep falling down because someone decided if you’re pregnant everything should be made of stretch (and we all know stretch gets ruined in the dryer) . ARGH!

Or the fact that some outfits are just big billowy bags that make you look larger. And how about the nice clothes that cost a small fortune when you’re only going to use them for maybe 4-6 months?

The worst part is that people who’ve never experienced pregnancy are usually the ones pushing the clothing or trying to tell you how you should put your outfit together. Double ARGH!

I’ll get off my soap box now, I think it’s time for my nap.

All this venting has made me very tired and the baby is kicking me like nobody’s business.

Marvelous Mama: Swimwear

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

The Baby’s not the only One who’s Swimming….
You are pregnant. You want to excise… what is a low impact sport you can do that is generally safe for every pregnant woman? Swimming. You can swim in your own pool or join in some prenatal exercise classes at your YWCA or local health club. Of course, you want to swim in style so I found you some beautiful swimsuits from Nordstrom, each for under $100.

So there you have it. With your health care providers go-ahead, you should be able to be one fit mamma in no time, and look great doing it!

For those of you who want to go straight from swimming to a walk by the riverside with your significant other, we suggest you make a quick change into this lovely outfit from Old Navy, and throw your swim stuff in this cute go-anywhere tote.

Marvelous Mama: Recalls

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

If you’re planning to buy a crib or have an old one that you’re planning to reuse, make sure to take note of this recent article from CBC News.

Vancouver-based manufacturer Stork Craft is voluntarily recalling more than a million baby cribs in Canada and the United States over a potential suffocation hazard.

The cribs were manufactured in Canada, China and Indonesia between May 2000 and November 2008, the company said in a release.

About 494,000 of the cribs were sold in Canada and 535,000 in the U.S. in several retailers such as Wal-Mart, Kmart and J.C. Penny, as well as on several websites, including Amazon.com, Babiesrus.com, Costco.com and Walmart.com, the U.S.Consumer Product Safety Commission said in an advisory Tuesday.
