Hijab Fashion Fix: Lose that muffin top

Monday, March 15th, 2010

For those of you who may not know the lingo, a “muffin top” is when you’ve got jeans that fit perfectly but there is a little jiggle that comes up over the top of the waist forming a sort of muffin top shape.

We wanted to let you know that there is a way to alleviate that problem temporarily without resorting to exercise (or in drastic cases surgery).

Ever since low cut jeans became the popular thing, muffin tops exploded on the scene. Unless you have an extremely flat stomach, it’s just not going to work. Sorry.

And for the ladies who think they can just wear a tight shirt to hold things in… oops.. now you we can see the muffin top even more clearly.

Not Your Daughter's Jeans $54.00~$120.00

We have been in your shoes, so we know it can be frustrating. What are you to do?

The answer: higher waist jeans.

It sounds scary and like something older women wear that could care less about fashion, but they work. Now they are coming back in style and they are hip and trendy.

"The Dreamer" by Old Navy $39.50

The whole reason mom jeans probably came into existence is because they GET RID OF THE MUFFIN TOP.

These types of pants have a higher waist so they hold everything in.

Back in the day jeans didn’t come in any decent cuts and were usually very tapered at the leg making you look like you had an enormous behind. But now you can find them in the trendiest cuts.

So next time you’re on the lookout for jeans, try one of the higher buts and we can guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Five ways to save money on makeup

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

If you’ve always loved department store and other expensive makeup brands, but didn’t want to spend all that money, we have a few tips for you from Anna De Souza of True Hollywood Makeup.

1. Try using drugstore brands that you find in places like Target, Walmart, Walgreens etc. These are usually cheaper and essentially do the same thing as the ones that cost more.

2. Matte nails are a big trend and if you long for Chanel nail color in a matte finish but don’t want to bust your budget then use what you already have. Forget about purchasing new shades. According to De Souza all you need is to top your existing polish with a top coat that will matte the base color.

3. Use a makeup finish to help your foundation stay put longer. De Souza’s recomendation: Skindinavia’s No More Shine because it diminishes oiliness and 10 Years Younger which adds in hydration. She adds that many inexpensive foundations are loaded with talc and mica which can be very drying on the skin.

4. Don’t worry about eye shadow that creases. De Souza says standard drugstore eyeshadows tend to have less pigment than their department store counterparts which means they don’t have that much color or staying power. She recommends pumping up drugstore shadow’s staying power with eyelid primers such as Urban Decay’s Primer Potion or L’Oreal’s De-Crease Eyeshadow Base and Primer.

5. Buy a better mascara wand for your eyelashes. Mascara formulas may change, but the biggest qualifier for lush lashes is the mascara wand. De Souza advises to go ahead and pick up the iconic Maybelline Great Lash but dump that flimsy brush and replace it with another one. Her picks include one that MAC offers which contains high quality synthetic fibers that help distribute the product without clumps as well as the Suki Brow Lash Brush from Skin Botanica for its thickness and blendability.

Do any of you have special things you do to save money on your favorite makeup brands?

Pop Culture Hijabi: Clueless dreams

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

pop culture hijabi

You know what I’ve always wanted? Well, besides a walk-in closet with  a whole wall just for shoes. (Honestly, that’s one of my life goals. Sad, I know, but how amazing would that be?)

Remember in Clueless how Cher had a computer to put together outfits for her? That would be fun to own.

10 Healthy snacks to keep you going

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Everyone has moments of crash and burn when the only thing that keeps them going is chocolate or some other tasty sweet.

Lately we’ve been trying to do our best and bust out the healthy stuff. What’s amazing is how much better we feel once we’ve eaten something substantial.

It’s not rocket science, we know, but it’s great to remind ourselves every now and then.

Here are some of the things we try to munch on when the Gremlin inside is trying to get us to “eat that Kit Kat, it’s OK you’ll workout later”:

  1. Handful of almonds and Craisins.
  2. A bowl of mixed greens with mandarin orange pieces, balsamic vinaigrette.
  3. A small 6 oz yogurt (we avoid fat free because of the fake sweetener, but you can find 99% fat free).
  4. Handful of baby carrots.
  5. Water or seltzer water with frozen fruit instead of ice.
  6. A bowl of Arugula with beets, avocado, and balsamic vinaigrette.
  7. Fresh piece of fruit that’s in season.
  8. Green pepper sliced in strips with a tiny dash of lemon and salt.
  9. Pretzels
  10. Pudding mixed with some whipped topping and fresh fruit chunks.

**Make sure you always eat a decent breakfast, lunch, and dinner then you won’t be snacking all the time on an empty stomach.**

What are your tips for beating the snacking habit with something healthy?
