Check out the post that I contributed to for BoingBoing one of the top blogs that covers a variety of topics from technology to pop culture. The piece I wrote is a response to people’s assumption that hijabis are oppressed.

Pop Culture Hijabi: Stocking up on Scarves

pop culture hijabi

A few months ago, one of my non-Muslims friends was planning a trip to Egypt. In the days before she left, I received the funniest phone call. She was out shopping for the vacation, preparing for some visits to mosques, and she called me excitedly from H&M. “Did you know that they sell scarves here?”

I think Muslim girls are well aware that major retailers are selling scarves that can easily function as hijabs. It’s become quite convenient.
I remember back when I started wearing hijab, which wasn’t even all that long ago. I had to wait until ISNA every year to stock up on good scarves.

Every year, I’d tell myself to make a list of the colors I’d need to search for, but, of course, that would never happen.

Now, more colors than ever are available out there.

Even my older relatives have started to notice that my hijab line has grown. One of my aunts always asks where I got my scarf from, and she’s always shocked when I tell her Old Navy or H&M.

Here are some favorite scarves from the mall starting with New York & Company (these are all on sale for $9.95)

Pink and Brown Scarf

City Style Global Chic Purple Scarf

Metallic Scarf

City Style Metallic Summer Scarf

Brown and Beige Scarf

City Style Neutral Strip Scarf

In fact, now that I’ve browsed the whole collection, I pretty much want all these colors.

And here’s a cute scarf from Old Navy, which is apparently all about the black and white right now (it’s only $5.00):

Black and White Scarf

One final one from H&M. I apologize for the low-res picture. H&M really needs to have a Web site so I don’t have to resort to taking my own pictures:

Great, now after all that Internet browsing, I’m going to have to go shopping.

Muslim Women Artists Forging New Territory

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

The New York Times recently featured an article that profiled two Muslim women artists in New York.

We remember Asma Shikoh (one of the artists featured) from back in the day when she was asking people to mail her their hijab for an art exhibit she was putting together.

Read the entire article here and find out about what she did with those scarves!
